ANGELS WATCHING OVER US… on Art & Spirituality
As an educator, mixed media painter and community artist whose works are inspired by and which intentionally intersect with the human experience, I remain a student, learning how to fully embrace and honor my personal interactions and perceptions while working with people in their communities; while experiencing the wondrous powers of nature; while reveling in the feelings of lightness, a wholeness that fills me when meditating; while holding true to the belief that if we believe in God, we believe in all He has created. As a vessel, my being able to manifest those experiences and feelings into works of art is a component of my spirituality and how I have chosen to engage and navigate my world.
The concepts of my spirituality directly connect to how I live my life and how I relate to others, which have a direct impact upon the physical appearances and messages I share through my artworks. Most times my own spirituality intertwines with materials, textures and construction, objectives ultimately defined by how my perceptions and actions through artmaking have potential to impact the human spirit, whether lifting up, depressing, delivering a message, or all of the aforementioned. It also connects with the life experiences of self and of others.
Some of my works begin and manifest as dreams. Some emerge as portraits of states of being that present actual scenarios and a need to change existing dynamics. Some are visual renditions of abstract thoughts that represent form, color and movement. Others are visual and spiritual offerings from chance meetings or deliberate encounters and observations of and within distinct or obtuse environments. Some works portray concepts that remain in that peculiar state of flux that is necessary to achieve personal growth, exploring humans’ experiences in spiritual form. Some are the haunting products of brief, yet profound experiences that have become life-changing events. Some are prayers, some are beseechments, some are offerings.
All are spiritual by nature and are constructed with any medium necessary.
