A LETTER FROM DR. PHILLIPS
Dear Friends,
History is alive and well in the little church at 520 East Main Street. The mission of the Church of the Colored People of Gillespie County/Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CCPGC/CMEC) is to “restore, preserve, and protect the history and religious traditions of the African Americans in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County.” This mission has become a reality.
Restoration has been ongoing for ten years and is now reaping results. The property showcases the historic church, a replica of the 1877 schoolhouse, and restrooms. Plans for a museum in the schoolhouse are underway. Much like the traveling pastors of the past, traditional African American church services—complete with inspiring sermons and encouraging choirs—take place quarterly. We invite you to join us at a service soon.
Staying true to all aspects of the historic restoration requires funding to maintain this essential part of our unique history. As we seek donations to continue the mission, we hope you will consider an end-of-the-year gift in 2025 and become a Friend of the CCPGC/CMEC. Your gift is tax-deductible. We are so grateful for your generosity, and look forward to what we can accomplish going forward into the New Year!
With appreciation,
Dr. Paul Phillips, III
President of the Board, CCPGC/CMEC
